Seminar Information

Students learn academic writing in practice by writing a seminar paper on a demanding topic in computer networking. To simulate the review process of real scientific conferences, submissions are peer-reviewed by fellow students, who provide feedback to one another. Each student is assigned at least one advisor who specializes in the field. Insights are then presented in a talk to the other participants. Selected students get the opportunity to have their work published in the seminar's proceedings.

The pre-course meeting will be held on 2026-07-07 at 13:00 in our seminar room (03.07.023) in the Informatics building in Garching.

Seminar places will be allocated using the faculty-wide matching system. More information can be found on the following pages:

Students who attend the pre-course meeting will receive a higher preference in the matching system.

Procedure

The seminar consists of the following parts:

  • a 4-page scientific paper in two-column IEEE style
  • a workshopping session on clear scientific writing
  • a scientific talk showcasing your findings to fellow seminar participants
  • a review of two seminar papers that provide feedback to the authors

Learning Goals

  • Learn to conduct a scientific (literature) research on an individual and recent topic.
  • Get used to searching in digital libraries
  • Learn to write a paper in LaTeX with a given template
  • Document your progress in a provided Git repository
  • Follow the rules of good scientific practice
  • Prepare your slides using beamerlatex
  • Convert your topic into an interesting talk
  • Like in real conferences we do a peer review among all participants
  • Learn from your and others' mistakes

The seminar is open to English speakers. Seminar topics are advised by different staff members of the chair. Each seminar topic is unique and only handed out once. Seminar papers address aspects of timely and ongoing research. For examples from past seminars, interested students may have a look at our proceedings.
